wegman's

[info]drglam and i went to wegman's grocery out west of the city today. i think she described it well as "the jordan's furniture of food" -- MASSIVE is the word that springs to my mind. but not uncomfortable or intimidating or poorly laid out.

i got a bunch of interesting teas, one new-to-me kind of citrus fruit (some tangelo-like thang), a peach sorbet that [info]drglam recommended, a pile of tasty-seeming salad fixin's.... yum :)

future plans include h-mart! :)

I love wegmans! I hear there is a vague plan for one to show up in burlington someday....

Hmart is pretty awesome too. the food court is tasty and their produce and meat sections are incredible.

Also Newton, next year!

Oo, really? Exciting!

Yup, mentioned by several Wegman's employees.

On the south side of Route 9 near the Chestnut Hill malls.

ETA: Newton Tab article says this store will be about half the size of the one you just visited.

I didn't know they had wegmans in Boston! The Wegmans family is from my college town--big into fox hunting and they used to donate horses to our college team. They leased me a fat little palomino named Frosty one winter to get him into shape for their foxhunting season.

sweet! this is the only one in the state so far (and it's an hour west of boston).

I need a new citrus fruit!
I always need a new citrus fruit!
Please explain :)

it's a "sumo citrus" -- apparently a mandarin with some orange hybridization -- a lot like a supergiant mandarin (like 5x the size of a regular mandarin). recommended :)

Ooh...weird. And I need to try that. Thanks!

Mmmm, H-Mart... Ya gotta love a giant Asian supermarket with its own food court!

and i do love it :)

This is great. Boston *badly* needs new blood in the supermarket retail space. Shaw's/Star and Stop&Shop have been without competition in most of metro Boston for far too long. Foodmaster is pretty much an also-ran, and Market Basket's primary virtue is that they're cheap(er), rather than any advantage in quality and variety of merchandise.

I haven't been to the Gigantic Market Basket in Chelsea yet. Have you? At least before Wegman's opened, it was claimed to be the largest supermarket in New England.

There's one other local chain - Roche Brothers.

Chelsea is way out of my way--I live in Belmont. So, no.

I've shopped at the Roche Brothers in Needham, because it's somewhat near work. It's small, and the prices are even higher than they are at Stop&Shop/Shaw's/Star.

my round is the farmer's market, mckinnon's, trader joe's, and harvest coop. market basket on occasion, similarly costco.

wegman's was fun but i don't think i'll be a regular or anything.

I didn't know they had H-Mart in Boston!

Actually, it's in Burlington, just south of 128 on Middlesex Turnpike (south of the Burlington Mall)

don't know if it's the same one, but it's awesome :)

I'm looking forward to a closer Wegman's. They're awesome.

have you been to this one yet?

No, I haven't. I've been to Wegman's in their original habitat, upstate NY.

I would LOVE to go with you on an expedition to one of these ssuperdupermarkets. Darn day job!

we just went on president's day because [info]drglam had it off :)

WEGMAN'S! <3

WEGMAN'S!!!!!!!!

I grew up in NY and I remember when we got our Wegman's - and it was always the best place ever. When I was little we used to drive 20 miles up the road once a month to the Wegman's in Corning. The rest of the month we did a patchwork of shopping at Nhelo's, the tiny health food store run by an Indian family (I remember shelling and eating pistachios with their oldest daughter who was my age), the not-very-good Super Duper near our house, or at the big scary bad-smelling TOPS on the southside.

It was quite an event when Elmira got a Wegman's, everyone was really pleased. It's still there, and doing well as far as I know.

When [info]garote went back with me for Thanksgiving this year my abba took G up to Rochester to see the "Mothership" Wegman's store. G was suitably impressed. :)

Glad you had a good visit! They usually have good prices on organic chicken of all kinds too - I know my mom will stock the freezer when she can.

Re: WEGMAN'S! <3

this one seemed to be thriving. their prices on organic bananas were pretty high, but the teas were an excellent bargain :)

margaretville always had an a&p, but i gather it's closed now :(
